Stem Cell Injections

Dr. Burrus has recently joined the Regenerative Care Network (RCN) which allows him to provide umbilical cord stem cells to patients with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is wear and tear of joint surfaces which can be painful and cause swelling of the joint. Stem cells may provide pain relief due to the reduction of inflammation and other benefits that are still being investigated.

Currently, these umbilical cord stem cells are only available in Texas as a part of a state-approved research study. Because Dr. Burrus has been selected to participate in this research study, he is one of a few physicians in Texas with access to this cutting-edge treatment option.

What are stem cells?

Stem cells, also called mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), are cells that have the capacity to change into various cell types. As they grow, they become specialized cells with a more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, cartilage cells, or bone cells. No other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate new cell types. Their function is to help the healing process by several means, most importantly by reducing local inflammation and aiding regeneration of damaged tissue. For osteoarthritis patients, the cells can result in less pain, less swelling, and possibly the restoration of joint structure and function.

What are umbilical cord stem cells?

There are many sources of cells, but RCN physicians use only cells from umbilical cord tissue from healthy mothers, provided by manufacturers approved by the FDA for their manufacturing practices. Thus, with RCN-selected cells, you are certain to receive only young, healthy cells that are ready for injection when you come for treatment – no painful bone marrow aspiration procedure involved. It is important to note that RCN physicians never use embryonic cells, and the umbilical cord stem cells are not taken from any miscarriage or abortion.

Why umbilical cord stem cells rather than using my own?

Umbilical cord stem cells have advantages over patient-derived bone marrow stem cells. There is no painful harvest with the umbilical cord cells, and based on research studies, the umbilical cord stem cells have a higher growth rate, a higher expansion capacity, survive longer after injected, and are a more potent anti-inflammatory treatment. As you age, the concentration of stem cells in your own bone marrow decreases. This problem does not exist in umbilical cord stem cell due to the very young age of these cells. In other words, they are a more powerful version of bone marrow stem cells.

What is the cost of the injection?

The cost is $5,500 which is only slightly higher than the cost of bone marrow stem cells.
